With the push worldwide towards clean and renewable energy sources, more and more people are considering geothermal energy. Did you know that this resource is increasingly used in Quebec? The question that many people are asking is: is it affordable as a type of heating? Let's take a look at geothermal energy and the benefits of using it

What is geothermal energy?

Geothermal energy is generated from existing energy stored in the earth. When harnessed, it can be used as an energy source for heating or air conditioning in homes. If you would like to use geothermal energy in your home, you must first purchase a geothermal system. These energy efficient systems are excellent options.

A geothermal system uses a heat pump, underground loop and distribution system to heat or cool a home. In the summer, the pump pulls hot air from the house and transfers it to the ground. It then returns cool air to the house. In the winter, the system extracts the warmer air from the ground and pumps it into the home.

Advantages & Disadvantages of a Geothermal System

Before installing a geothermal system, it is important to understand the full picture. There are tremendous advantages to this system including:

  • Can save up to 60% on heating costs compared with conventional systems;
  • Can function as a heating, air conditioning and hot water system in your home;
  • Easy maintenance – no difference in maintenance than a conventional system;
  • It is sustainable and environmentally friendly.

There are some disadvantages to a geothermal system as well. They include:

  • Initial costs range from $20,000 - $40,000;
  • It may be insufficient for older homes, which may require modifications to properly run this system;
  • There was drilling costs.

Profitable but Long-Term Investment

While a geothermal system can be an excellent choice for your heating and cooling needs, it is important to remember that this is a long-term investment. With start-up costs of up to $40,000 it, the time in which you start to see a return on your investment will vary considerably.
